ANCIENT VIKING CAMPGROUND

ANCIENT VIKING CAMPGROUND
August 19: Stoughton, Wisconsin. From under the Bounder's awning you will see a glimpse of this beautiful campground that has actual remnant buildings of a Lutheran orphanage that was founded in 1889. We are near Baker and Laura's home about 6 miles from here. An exciting portion of the adventure developed when the Bounder's outside door decided to lock itself and refused to budge open until the 123rd try. A trained RV repair person is on the way to work on the latch. Please give me credit for not attempting self repairs. Janis says we could get in through a window if necessary. I'm not so sure about me.

Intermission

I am publishing this post due to some folks' advice that we haven't issued any posts for a spell. I am somewhat amazed that anyone reads the blog and would miss any recent postings. At any rate, we are presently resident in the Ashland condo where we have been working on fixing, painting, cleaning, de-junking, addressing the unexpected presence of water, and listing on the market. If all goes as planned, we will in essence be trading the Ashland condo for one in southwestern Florida. We like the Bounder but may upgrade it and spend about 6 months on the road in the warmer months including time in the greater Ashland/Bluegrass area. If all goes as planned, we will be departing here June 10 and going up to Bethesda for the US Open at Congressional. Then we may head into the Gettysburg, PA area for a little historical enlightenment, and eventually into the Northern Michigan and Madison Wisconsin areas later in the summer. We should be back in Ashland by October. Thanks for your interest and I'll certainly keep you posted!

April 8, New Orleans

I am not sure where to begin, but I feel compelled to attempt brief description of this fascinating, multi-cultured, resilient, historical city. Yes, you will find Katrina effects but they do not dominate the city's presentation. New Orleans has largely reconstructed itself although even today volunteers, local, national and international pour into the region to continue the rebuilding process. Street names and layouts, diversity between the American and French sectors, quality, quality music, so many historical remnants, friendly, fun-loving, and helpful people of various heritages, palate stimulating local recipes touch upon, but in no way adequately list elements comprising this unique contribution to Americana. If you haven't had the opportunity, or even if you have, and you have any remote sense of musical appreciation, book a stay here during the French Quarter festival where about 70 groups per day perform on 14 stages for 4 days, all for free. This production represents a true tribute to the resources and musical emphasis of this community.

March 30, 2011

Storms near Tampa you may have heard about on the national news today were horrendous and nearly brought I-75 traffic to a standstill. GrandJan bravely forged ahead behind the wheel. A very tight fueling stop almost (within 2") caused the first car unhook requirement. Here now safe at Alachua, (Gainesville) FL and hoping to make Fort Walton Beach tomorrow under much better traveling conditions.

Arrived uneventfully in downtown Bonita Springs, Florida. Here until the end of March. Thus far we have seen Danny and Jo Dove pulling into a Publix parking lot as we were pulling out, and the lady who teaches yoga and Pilates classes here at the RV resort is from Greenup, more specifically Wurtland, Kentucky.

C B Smith Park, Pembroke Pines, FL

Landed here in the middle of Martina McBride/Trace Adkins concert with crowd of Derby proportions. This campsite happened to be one of the best seats in the house.

On farther South.

Departing The Great Outdoors, Titusville (check that website if you haven't already) and heading about 200 miles south to Pembroke Pines, FL near Caroline, Daniel, Heather, and Will's.

We didn't do it (we're pretty sure)

Nice RV washing guy fortunately discovered cut in roof excitingly before major storm moved into area. He provided quite adequate duct tape patch before we could purchase and apply slightly more permanent fix the following morning. This enforces the well-observed adage, "Go nowhere, do nothing without serviceable duct tape supply close at hand." This morning, wife has reported that error in refrigerator temp. setting has produced frosty fruit syndrome.

The Great Outdoors, Day 2

Pretty nice here (natives think it's very cold). About 71 high. If you didn't get the chance earlier and still give a flying Farsi, check out The Great Outdoors, Titusville, FL website. Tomorrow or Wednesday a nice fellow is going to come by and wash the salt encrustation from the poor Bounder. 'Til then.

Titusville reached.

For rather developed RV based city, please check The Great Outdoors, Titusville, FL website. I'll post some pictures of this place tomorrow.

Safely into Tipton, GA. Much smoother ride today. See way oversudsed above. Tomorrow, Titusville, FL.

Departure from home base Ashland/Huntington West KOA 8:21 a.m. Much ice encountered from night's assault. Roads pretty clear but I-75 S around Tennessee line!!! So many nonnegotiable potholes are like driving over a mogul field. Jarred coach so badly that table broke and unmounted from wall. Made target Sweetwater, TN in good time this PM and got unbelievably salt-covered tow washed. Now having delicious meal on honorable coach floor. (Just kidding, plenty of dining surfaces and we'll have table fixed by Sunday). Adventure continues. Tomorrow, Tifton, GA.

Can we Get Outta Dodge?

Not perfect cooperation from good ol' mother nature on planned takeoff date/time Fri., Jan. 21, 8:00 eastern, but could be much worse. http://www.weather.com/outlook/driving/interstate/wxdetail/41101?dayNum=2
Can we make Sweetwater, TN by that afternoon? Probably. Your thoughts and prayers appreciated.

Monday, January 10, 2011

Countdown now T minus 11 days and counting, whatever the 'T' may mean. Is takeoff correct?

Camped today at FoxFire, Milton, WV while we hit Target in a large way. Nice campsite - nice folks. No wrecks or major mishaps. Spouse still speaking. MPG between 5-8. More soon.
